Title: Water/Wastewater Treatment Plant Mechanic

Join our Advanced Water Purification Facility (AWPF) in Santa Cruz, CA as a Mechanic. The AWPF is a new complex state-of-the-art facility comprising of Ozone, Membranes, Ultraviolet-Advanced Oxidation, and waste treatment processes. It is designed to treat an average of 1,500 acre-feet per year (AFY) or approximately 1.3 million gallons per day (MGD) of Secondary Wastewater Effluent to recharge the groundwater basin and combat seawater intrusion.

Summary:

Under supervision of the O&M Supervisor, as a Mechanic of the AWPF, you’ll join a collaborative team ensuring that our client (Soquel Water District) can deliver their services – uninterrupted. You’ll have the opportunity to lead a variety of tasks in the preventive and corrective maintenance at the AWPF. You’ll contribute to the success of our program with efficient preventive maintenance and effective solutions to challenges that may arise at the AWPF. You’ll perform preventive and corrective maintenance on buildings, structures, grounds, machinery and equipment; lubricate equipment and check for malfunctions; replace packing in pumps or valves; replace bearings in motors, pumps, and other equipment; tune engines, set valve clearance, clean, and adjust regulators; examine equipment failures to identify cause and to prevent recurrences; and install and set up new equipment. You’ll also clean and paint interior and exterior equipment and buildings; lean out pipes and perform other plumbing and pipe fitting tasks as required; use gas and/or arc welding equipment to heat, cut, braze, or weld; perform duties of painter in their absence; assist in keeping maintenance records; and perform other duties as required. Basic Qualifications:

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • CWEA Mechanical Technologist Grade 1 or above is preferred.
  • Five (5) years of experience in the maintenance of wastewater or water treatment plants and related equipment, or similar industrial setting.
  • Associate or Bachelor (BA/BS) degree in related field is preferred but not required. 
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment, and instruments used in the maintenance, repair, and calibration of mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical
  • Familiarity with the principles and practices of water or wastewater treatment plant operations and process control
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with no major infractions.
  • Proficient in the use of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Proficiency in safely using hand and power tools.
  • Proficiency in mechanical schematics and one-line diagrams
  • Proficiency in hydraulic and pneumatic flow-controlled systems
  • Forklift and / or heavy equipment experience. 
  • Experience with Planning, Scheduling and Inventory Control
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Possess experience coordinating maintenance activities with operational needs and evaluating maintenance policies and objectives.
  • Ability to diagnose malfunctions and determine effective courses of action for correcting them.
  • Support assets review and condition assessment efforts.
  • Keep records and assist in preparing routine and special reports.
  • Help coordinate work plans and maintenance activities to meet Asset Management priorities.
  • Help provide training to less experienced employees.
  • Ability to travel 25% of the time.

Additional demands may involve a specific level of dexterity, grip strength, climbing and cardiorespiratory demands. The work areas may be indoor, outdoor, have loud noise, active machinery, high pressure fluid systems, electrical equipment, confined spaces, heights and depths, fumes, air borne particles, noxious gases, and chemicals. The use of appropriate safety equipment will be mandatory in these areas to prevent hazardous contact.
