POSITION SUMMARY:
Performs installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment used for a variety
of environmental projects.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Installs, repairs and maintains mechanical equipment, including heavy equipment and
vehicles, as needed, on project sites.
Ensures that the installation and repair of equipment complies with agency policy and
local codes and regulations.
Replaces units or parts, such as gears, bearings, and filters.
Tests newly installed and pre-existing mechanical equipment.
Orders replacement parts for equipment.
Identifies and confirms time frame for completion of repairs.
Uses precision tools such as micrometer migs, dial indicators and RPM indicators.
Communicates the necessity for proper and timely maintenance of all equipment to
operators and/or management personnel.
Assists management personnel to train on site staff in proper equipment maintenance techniques.
Works with management and other maintenance staff to develop and implement a
preventative maintenance program for project mechanical equipment and/or vehicles.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
Persons appointed to this position are subject to be called to duty in emergencies.
Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS:
May include responsibilities for overall direction, coordination and evaluation of
managed staff, interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, delegating and
directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and
addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Job Requirements
Qualifications:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Graduation from a standard high school or possession of GED equivalency certificate and
- seven years’ experience performing installation, repair and maintenance of mechanical
- equipment.
- Formal schooling from an accredited vocational school with a major in a related field may
- be substituted for experience. Education experience may be substituted on a year-for-year
- basis for up to three years of the required experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Appointment to some sites may require ability to obtain a security clearance.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing and the ability to follow oral and
- written instructions.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- Possession of a valid driver's license meeting the requirements of Maryland law, the MES
- Fleet Policy and other MES Policies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand and walk and use hands and arms to handle equipment.
- The employee is also regularly
- required to hear and talk.
- The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch
- or crawl and climb to service equipment.
- Appointment to some sites may require confined space entry.
- A confined space is large enough that an employee can bodily enter and performs assigned tasks but has limited o restricted means for entry or exit and is not designed for continuous employee occupancy.
- These areas could include tanks, manholes, silos pits, vaults, spillways, vessels, etc., and
- have the possibility to contain an atmospheric hazard.
- Employees working at these types of facilities will be required to enter and perform the work involved with confined spaces,
- and will be required to adhere to all safety procedures and participate in trainings associated with confined space entry.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- The employee is occasionally required to lift 50 lbs, using proper lifting technique and regularly required to use proper protective equipment such as coveralls, vision and hearing protection, steel-toed shoes and hard hats when necessary.
Responsibilities:
- BIH Mechanic Responsibilities:
- Mechanic will provide the following services: routine maintenance and support, environmental
- monitoring, and Site development construction support.
Routine Maintenance and Support
Work will include, but not be limited to, the following:
- storms to detect water ponding that may indicate settlement.
- problems with the cap system. The cap surface will be inspected annually and after
- Periodic visual inspection of the site surface soil and multimedia caps, to detect any
- removed as access and safe conditions allow.
- Portions of the site will be inspected for the presence of debris.
- General trash will be application.
- Control vegetative growth on the outboard embankment with an annual herbicide at least a monthly basis.
- inspect the well system pumps by turning them on and off if they do not already cycle on
- Assist in monitoring the pumping activities of each well system pump and, monthly,
- pressure relief valves on a monthly basis.
- Inspection and maintenance of the valves (testing opened and closed) and identified during the inspection.
- Monthly inspections of the extraction well vaults and any maintenance activities level measurements on a monthly basis.
- Measure water levels of the piezometers to verify the accuracy of the ultrasonic water frequently as determined by the Honeywell site representative.
- Maintenance of the extraction well system pressure gauges at least quarterly or more
- Repair/re-thread man-hole lid bolt threads and roadway vault access hatch threads truck transfer bay collection sump.
- Annual cleaning of the two 11,000-gallon storage tanks and inspection/cleaning of the and maintain all valves and process piping within the tank room and truck transfer bay.
- Monitor the groundwater collection and transfer operation: monitor system performance an annual performance test.
- Maintenance of the process pumps: quarterly check of bolts, packing and alignment, and completing daily inspection logs.
- groundwater gradient monitoring system, by completing daily inspections and Assist the site supervisor in maintaining the daily Operation Log and monitoring the Calibrate 4-gas confined space entry meters.
- Fault find/repair/replace ultrasonic water level sensors
- Fault find remove/repair/replace electric piston pumps
- Safely load leachate tanker trucks
