Quality Control Construction Inspector

Job Description

Construction Inspector Duties: To monitor the work of contractors to ensure quality control and contract compliance for VDOT tunneling construction project of moderate complexity, under the direction of a Tunnel Quality Control Manager or lead.

Specific Responsibilities include:

Inspect work activities in Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) while in operation to monitor head pressure, and TBM arrangement, cutter head , drive, screw conveyors, gantries, and alignment.
Inspect liner ring build positions and joints offset, radial and circumferential
Observe and record grouting of liner segments during the annulus ring build, back fill grouting
Verify tunnel segments identification and check for damaged segments and seals
Monitor as built alignment from TBM database VS theoretical alignment , make sure misalignment is identified.
Inspect / verify TBM guidance system
Monitor and record Jack Pressure and extensions including load distribution pad
Record deformation after ring build
Verify ring build positioning
Overseas, and provides instructions to more junior and less experienced inspectors
Advises contractors, other inspectors, and supervisors of nonconformance and recommends adjustments to operations
Track deficiencies and nonconformance and their corrective actions; document in Daily Report
Prepares Daily Reports and may review more junior inspector reports
Takes field measurements and makes basic calculations of field quantities
Reviews lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard survey and field engineering markings
Maintains project records; including daily diaries, records of deficiencies/nonconformance and logs
Completes check lists and test reports for work activities
Review, collect and monitor materials delivery tickets
Perform other administrative duties as assigned.
May be required to inspects and monitors contractual field work which includes excavations, drainage facilities, concrete placement, steel and precast member erections, soil and aggregate placement, road surfaces, and structures

TBM Construction Inspector is expected to be competent with the following skills:

Experience with TBM data monitoring, work activities, and ground movement monitoring from instruments
Experience with segment repair in the tunnel.
Familiar with OHSA rule in a gassy environment, safety to be adhered in the tunnel.
Must be capable to read specification and IFC drawing and work procedures this is necessity for inspectors
Experience filing daily inspection report concisely as instructed. Using company software and computer
Must be willing to work on weekend being Saturday and Sunday and rotational shifts
Operating computer equipment, software programs and field inspection Functional computer usage including familiarity with Microsoft office suite software
Read and interpret tunnel, roadway, structure and bridge plans and specification
Apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine minor field adjustments
Maintain detailed records and keep documentation organized for inspections and testing.

Performance Expectations
Accurately records and reports daily forms per project requirements
Communicates effectively with client, contractor, staff, and supervisor
Proactively resolves problems at the lowest level
Adheres to project scope, schedule, and budget
Reviews all work for completeness and accuracy prior to submitting
Submits accurate time sheets, mileage and expense reports on time each week
Reviews jobsite safety daily and takes immediate action to document and resolve issues
Understands OSHA Safety Standards and client corporate policies and follows them at all times
Maintains all required certifications and participates in training courses as required
Understands all applicable industry standards for project and performs all tasks per standards and client requirements

Job Requirements

Qualifications
Associates degree in Civil Engineering Technology or applicable field.
4 - 8 years of experience required.
Pre-employment drug screening is a condition of employment. Background and motor vehicle checks may be required based upon position.
